Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style. We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this. First, I created an overview sheet that explained the concept to my students and included a graphic organizer for them to fill out to give them some accountability. Prep over. I set up my classroom to have a circle of desks.

Speed Learning: A Classroom Activity

After 15 years in the classroom, I have some thoughts about ice-breaker activities:. And so, it turns out that the social risk is high and the social reward is low. Additionally, too often the person leading the activity has not thought through the point of the activity and how it fits into the course. And going around the room talking about what you are studying or what you ate for dinner last night is boring.

No one cares. In some ways, I think a bad icebreaker leaves the impression that the course will be unengaging and unimportant. Still, the ice-breaker is widely used because it is important. Spending all of our time on the first day of class merely reading through the syllabus, or worse, dismissing students early with no meaningful learning experience or connection to the course, is a missed opportunity.

I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside. The best part is that this lesson model is so versatile that you can find a creative way to use it for just about anything!

I facilitate this lesson to help my students practice their rhetorical skills during our unit on persuasion. To do this, I use a variety of topics, ranging from silly to serious, so that the debates spark some friendly controversy. Speed debating is great way to incorporate a lot of practice to familiarize students with the strategies and structure of debate. Just like speed debating, this strategy involves mini discussions over essential questions.

This helps students critically think, hear different perspectives, and articulate their ideas in a low-risk setting. I like to use speed discussion during thematic units, as a way to facilitate synthesis of different texts. This strategy is also a great way to expose students to different ideas and perspectives during the pre-writing phase of the writing process.

Speed Dating is a valuable tool for anyone that runs a Free Choice Reading FCR program in their language classes, because students will only come to love reading if they enjoy the books that they are able to read. There are two big factors that influence enjoyment:. She is looking to implement an FCR program in her 6th grade classes, and she is doing Speed Dating now in order to set them up for success.

One common reason that FCR programs flop is that students do not know how to choose books in the target language that they will be interested in and able to understand! I just ordered new titles from Fluency Matters and from several authors that self-publish through Amazon, so my home library has about 15 new titles.
