Dating Jesus is very well written. Campbell is a bit younger than I, from a different part of the country, and of a different gender, but she is a great storyteller and her reminiscences of growing up in church were very engaging. That kind of thing sickens me. It seems not to have affected her as much as it would I. I wish I could endorse this book completely, but there are some hindrances.

There are smatterings of liberal politics stem cells, Gulf War, etc , with the assumption of their rightness, that I could have done without.

When it comes to economic inequality, and the cycle of poverty, I have been researching at my internship New Have n Reads how the lack of proper education contributes to the cycle of poverty. Specifically, the lack of suitable education, or education at all, provided for women creates a cycle of illiteracy, which results in the inability to gain tools necessary to make an income. Nearly two-thirds of illiterate adults worldwide are women, it is estimated that million women 15 years of age and older are illiterate.

The cycle of poverty is parallel to illiteracy rates. While efforts have been put in globally and nationally to improve the quality of education among women, those who missed out on the proper education early on in their formative years still feel the effects today. It is estimated that if a student is not reading proficiently by the 4 th grade, that student has a 78 percebt chance of never catching up.

This is a factor to the wealth inequality and income inequality rampant in our country.

When she was growing up in Missouri, hard by Route 66 and in the shadow of the Ozarks, Susan Campbell was completely immersed in that old time religion. A few good anecdotes, but with few insights. Hartford Courant columnist Campbell was raised in Missouri as a member of the church of Christ they were taught not to capitalize church. She describes herself in girlhood as a true believer, utterly devoted to Jesus and immersed in the life of her congregation. As time passed, she began asking questions about the role of her gender within her church and society. Despite holding on to her church involvement for a number of years, she eventually left organized religion.

Though at times affecting and humorous, her memoir has a number of flaws. Campbell tends to dwell on particular events that highlight her personal insecurities and have little to do with the supposed subject matter. Several pages recall the night she spent as a sophomore at the homecoming game, hashing out her angst from that mundane moment.
